A warm welcome to the website of St Mary's Cathedral, Limerick - and of Limerick City Parish.
Cathedrals have always been places of welcome and hospitality, where all are welcome. As Dean of St Mary's Cathedral, and Rector of Limerick City Parish, I am glad that at last we are able to begin to get Limerick onto the map via the Internet, with this new website for St Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick (Church of Ireland), and of Limerick City Parish, which also includes the Parish Church of St Michael, Pery Square, Limerick, and Abington Church in Murroe, County Limerick. Over the coming weeks and months we will be adding information about who we are, about our historic places of prayer, about special events, about a range of events taking place in our churches, and especially about information on the historic treasures and gems in our churches.
St Mary’s Cathedral stands above the Shannon River on King’s Island, where it was founded in 1168 AD. Today it is still used every day of the year for prayer - which is open to all. It is also open daily for visits by tourists and pilgrims, and we are hoping in the coming year to develop an interactive tourist trail, to augment the new information panels for visitors.
St Mary's is open every day. There are accessible toilets, with a new ramp, and we are planning in the near future to reserve two car parking spaces for those carrying the official permit.
Summer opening times (May to September): 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and 9am to 4pm Saturdays, and 1030am to 4pm on Sundays.
Winter opening times (October to April): 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and 9am to 1pm Saturdays, and 1030am to 1pm on Sundays.
Daily prayer: Morning Prayer 9am Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. On Tuesdays and Thursdays the Eucharist (Holy Communion) is celebrated at 1030am.
Sunday worship is at 11.15am and 7pm.
You are very welcome to visit us in person and through the internet, and we hope you will visit us again, and be inspired to work with us as we serve our Lord Jesus Christ in prayer, mission and outreach in our world.
This website is designed to help you – with information about who we are, and what Anglicans believe, on the rich historical legacy of this sacred space, as well as new of future events, and of future plans to enhance the smaller chapels in the cathedral.
For those who come as visitors, we do suggest a donation of €3.00; we receive no government subsidies or EU money, and rely on the good will of our visitors, as the Cathedral costs almost €500 per day to run. As St Mary's is primarily a house of prayer, we are committed to it staying open daily.
Thank you for visiting us.
