| The
Cathedral
of the Blessed Virgin Mary (St Mary's) was founded in 1168
by
King Donal Mor O' Brien. It has been the Cathedral Church
of the United Diocese of Limerick and Ardfert and Aghadoe since
1660. The Cathedral is built at the very heart of the ancient
city of Limerick on an island in the Shannon river. This island
has seen many struggles because of its strategic position controlling
the southern end of this mighty river. Just as the Vikings the
Normans and English arrived here in succession so today people
from all over the world come to visit the historic Cathedral
of St Mary which is a true gem of medieval Irish architecture.
The cathedral has down the centuries, witnessed many struggles
and much carnage and has not escaped the scars of battle itself.
Its function has been as a place of prayer and retreat for the
people of the city and for people from all over world and it
continues to fulfill that role today.
Despite
loving care and regular maintenance, the building is showing
the signs of wear and tear and there is a need for the present
generation to respond as faithfully as our forefathers did to
help maintain this precious building for future generations
to appreciate and enjoy.
