'A Hop, Skip and Jump'

In the introduction to this book, its author refers to the lack of recognition by historians of Victorian education of those directly involved in decision-making because they did not leave their imprint on any future educational policies. They did not leave educational ‘monuments’ in the shape of recognisable twentieth-century institutions. The history of St. Michael’s national school was written to include such decision-making organisations that directly affected the curriculum and life of the children of the school throughout its 132-year life. Most of these organisations were Church of Ireland in ethos and are widely omitted from educational studies of Limerick.

This history also strives to give the reader an extra insight and appreciation of the huge support network that exists with schools under Church of Ireland management. St Michael’s national school was a Church of Ireland parochial school when founded in 1873 by the parish rector. It became affiliated to the national schools education system in 1882 and has remained so ever since.

This history was written as a project led by the school’s History Committee who endeavour to bring history alive for the children.
